A04 The Role of Synaptic Microcircuitry during Axon Regeneration

The recent years saw a number of experimental interventions that led to remarkable regeneration of injured axons in the central nervous system. Regenerating axons, however, fail to reach their original target, but form connections with other neurons in close proximity. The nature of these regeneration-induced synaptic micronetworks is undefined. We will study regeneration induced microcircuitry by using a classical regeneration paradigm in the spinal cord. This project will give us key insights into how lesioned axons re-integrate into micronetworks, which is the prerequisite for functional regeneration in the central nervous system.
