Memory consolidation during sleep and waking state at the level of single neurons in the human medial temporal lobe
This project has in the past successfully delineated prominent systems-level effects associated with successful encoding and retrieval of memories. Using intracranial EEG and single-unit recordings, the project will analyze mechanisms of human memory consolidation. First, the project will examine if reactivations of firing patterns induced by scenes or objects occur during sleep and awake periods and whether these reactivations are related to subsequent successful memory retrieval. Second, the project will evaluate whether spontaneous thoughts about the scenes/objects are related to the occurrence of reactivation patterns, and whether depending on thought content memory consolidation is facilitated or inhibited.
